7 -2001 Ford Taurus The 2001 Ford Taurus returns as a carryover model with minor functional changes. Five models are available: LX, SE, SES, SEL, and SE Wagon. The LX represents the entry level, and the SEL offers the highest level of comfort and luxury for the Taurus. A new exterior color, Spruce Green, has been added, and all models now come standard with an 18-gallon fuel tank. A Lower Anchor and Tether for Children (LATCH) anchoring system has also been incorporated throughout the entire model lineup. Power locks are standard this year, and available options include a rear spoiler, anti-lock brakes, side impact air bags, and an upgraded premium audio group. Power adjustable control pedals and six-passenger seating are also offered.

All Suburban 1500's are powered by a 295-hp 5.3L Vortec V-8 engine, while the 2500's boast a 6.0 V-8 engine.

9 -2003 BMW 5 Series Minor equipment shuffling is the main 2003 change of note as BMWs midrange line prepares for a model-year-2004 redesign. The 525i sedan and wagon use a 2.5-liter inline 6-cyl engine, the 530i sedan a 3.0 version. The 540i sedan and wagon have a 4.4-liter V8. The high-performance M5 sedan comes only with a 4.9-liter V8 and manual transmission. Other versions offer manual or automatic with standard or extra-cost manual shift gate, depending on model. All 5s include an antiskid system, front side airbags, and front head-protecting tubular side airbags. Rear torso and head-protecting side airbags are standard on the M5 and optional on other models. All 6-cyl models add a standard sunroof for 03. And now standard on the manual-transmission 540i sedan and optional on other 540i models is a new Sport Package with 18-inch wheels, front spoiler, and sport suspension.

15 -1993 Nissan Maxima New aerodynamic sheet metal replaced the Maximas former boxy look. The new model was not only longer and wider, it rode on four additional inches of wheelbase. Under the hood, the Maxima retained the former 3.0-liter V6, but engineering changes resulted in 160 horsepower instead of 154. If you chose the GXE, the only transmission was a 4-speed automatic. Meanwhile, the sporty SE came equipped with either a 5-speed manual, or the automatic at no extra charge. The driver-side airbag becomes standard for 1993. The change coincided with the addition of built-in safety belts for an optional rear child-safety seat.

17 -1999 Jaguar XK8 The 1999 XK8 two-door is available as a coupe and convertible model. For 1999, the engine mechanical has been updated. New exterior paint colors were added, Phoenix and Alpine for the convertible. The convertible also receives a new top color, Beige. The convertible features a one-button operation that raise and lower the top while the car is traveling at up to 10mph. The service schedule requires spark plug change at 100,000 miles and oil change intervals of 10,000 miles under normal driving condition, reducing maintenance cost. The automatic transmission typically does not require fluid changes, the camshafts are driven by zero-maintenance chains and the mechanical cams followers require no periodic lash adjustment.

Uplevel TTs have 225 hp and a 6-speed manual. Base models come only with front-wheel drive and traction control. Audis quattro all-wheel drive is standard for 225-hp TTs. All include an antiskid system and front side airbags. Sixteen-inch wheels are standard on base models and 17s are optional. The 225-hp TTs come with 17-inch wheels and add 18s as an exclusive option for 03. A power top is standard on the 225-hp convertible, optional for the base version; both include a heated glass rear window. Blue and green soft tops are newly available with selected paint colors.

29 -2001 Chevrolet Astro Available in two models, 2WD and AWD, the Astro Passenger Van enters this model year with several changes. The standard automatic transmission receives a tow/haul feature, while the 4.3L V-6 engine gains enhanced engine performance and fuel economy. Two new exterior colors are Pewter and Dark Toreador Red. As always, the Astro Passenger Van is equipped with many safety features including child seat tether anchors, a child safety lock on the sliding door, and a theft deterrent system. A new seven-tumbler key cylinder has been added in order to provide greater security. Options on the Passenger Van include rear air conditioning, an AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player, and running boards. Four-wheel anti-lock brakes remain standard.

The RAV4 was originally released in Japan in May of 1994 and sold at a rate of almost 100,000 a year. Forty percent of the RAV4s parts came from the companies parts bin. The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine is originally from the second generation Camry and its front suspension and all-wheel-drive system are borrowed from the Celica All-Trac. Safety features consist of side impact door beams, high mounted stop lamp and energy absorbing steering wheel. In addition to several appearance packages, optional equipment available include anti-lock brakes, aluminum wheels and cruise control.

XL-7 is basically a stretched version of Suzuki's compact Grand Vitara, with a 12.6-inch-longer wheelbase, 22.9 inches of added length, and a larger 2.7-liter V6. LX and uplevel EX models seat five passengers. Versions labeled LX III and EX III add a 3rd-row seat for 7-passenger capacity. LXs come with manual transmission, EXs with a 5-speed automatic that's optional on LXs. XL-7 offers rear-wheel drive or 4WD that should not be left engaged on dry pavement but has low-range gearing. All models include a tire-pressure monitor. ABS is standard on all but the 2WD LX, where it's optional. Neither front side airbags or curtain side airbags are offered. Leather upholstery is standard on EXs.

Late to the SUV party, Honda rebadged the Isuzu Rodeo as the Honda Passport. The Isuzu Trooper emerged as the Acura SLX. Now comes the much-anticipated in-house SUV. Acura claims its MDX offers best-in-class V6 horsepower and torque, greatest fuel efficiency, greenest emissions, and best crashworthiness. The MDX offers seven-passenger capacity and a unique four-wheel-drive system that prevents skids almost before they occur. All this is wrapped in a neat though not flashy package with the calm attention to detail expected of things Honda.

Safety and security improvements include a battery-rundown protection system, automatic headlamp control, and lockout provision. The lockout provision prevents the driver door from locking in the event that the key is left in the ignition. The optional remote keyless entry includes panic alarm. Other improvements feature a plastic fuel tank with 27-gallon capacity and a quieter V6 engine. New standard features include 15-inch steel wheels, flash-to-pass feature and retained accessory power. Retained accessory power feature maintains power to accessories for 20 minutes after ignition is turned off. Running boards, luggage carrier, and a child security sliding-door lock are optional this year.

44 -2003 Ford F250 Ford Super Duty trucks out-sell the heavy-duty pickups from Chevrolet and Dodge combined. Ford has improved them for 2003. A new 6.0-liter diesel engine brings more power and reduced emissions to the Super Duty line. The standard 5.4-liter V8 gas engine has been revised for quieter and more refined operation. The base interior is nicer, and a power sliding moon roof is available for Crew Cabs. Those changes, plus new option packages make the 2003 F-350 and F-250 models more people-friendly. Still, these trucks arent designed to be family-sedan substitutes that make an occasional run to Home Depot. Fords full-size but lighter-duty F-150 is more than enough truck for that job. The Super Duty pickups look like serious big rigs, and they are. Ford Super Duty trucks dont offer the chassis sophistication of the newer designs from GM and Dodge, but their new and revised powertrains are first-class.

Expected to be larger and longer than its predecessor, the new Avalon will also feature a more spacious interior. Powertrain will be a 3.5-liter V-6, which is basically a beefed-up version of the Camry's current engine. This V-6, which will probably be mated to a five-speed automatic, should be capable of at least 270-horsepower.

48 -1997 Plymouth Voyager More aerodynamic in shape than their predecessors, the new Chrysler minivans could be equipped with a sliding door on the drivers side, and center and rear seats had built-in Easy Out rollers. All models had a sliding door on the passenger side, plus a one-piece rear liftgate. The Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country are nearly identical.Minivans came in standard Voyager and long wheelbase Grand Voyager body styles, each holding up to seven occupants. Plymouths came only in base and SE trim. Dual airbags and antilock braking were standard at first, but ABS became an option on base minivans during the 1996 model year. All models were front-drive. Base engine was a new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with dual camshafts. Two V6s were available: 3.0- and 3.3-liter, making 150 and 158 horsepower, respectively.

The new Sport package offers a rear decklid spoiler, tape stripe graphics, sport cloth seat and door trim, and white alumium wheels. Except for that package, there isnt much that is optional on the Festiva save an automatic transaxle, air-conditioning, and an upgraded stereo. The one-and-only engine still fares very well in Transport Canadas roundup of fuel economy numbers, while turning out 63 horsepower at 5000 rpm.

99 -1994 Nissan Sentra 4-Door The revised Sentra lineup eliminated both hatchback and wagon models--only 2-door and 4-door notchback sedans were included. They retained the front-wheel-drive configuration and featured the same subcompact dimensions. The model lineup consisted of E, XE, and GXE trim levels for the 4-door, along with E, XE, SE, and sporty SE-R model when ordering a 2-door. All but the SE-R came with the previous Sentras 1.6-liter 4-cylinder. E models came with a 4-speed manual transmission standard or an optional 3-speed automatic. On the other trim levels, a 5-speed manual was standard, with a 4-speed automatic being the optional gearbox. Only standard equipment changed for 1994.

100 -1998 Ford F150 SuperCab When Ford redesigned its F-Series pickup truck as an early 1997 model, it had been the top-selling vehicle of any kind for close to 15 years. Only the half-ton F-150 and the three-quarter-ton F-250 were redesigned initially; heavier-duty pickups (F-250 Super Duty and F-350) stuck with the prior design for a while. The F-150 pickup came with rear- or 4-wheel drive, in regular-cab and extended-cab form. Called SuperCab, the latter had a passenger-side third door, plus a 3-place rear seat that folded to create a flat, steel cargo floor. Short-bed models had a 6.5-foot cargo bed; long-bed models held an 8-foot bed. Ford called its flat-side cargo bed Styleside. The Flareside model, with a flared-fender carbo box, came only in short-bed form. A floor-mounted transfer case lever was standard on 4WD models. An electric transfer case, operated by a dashboard switch, was optional.
